Ben Nestrud

Ben is the founder and executive director of Backcountry Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reconnecting veterans and first responders through transformative outdoor experiences. Born and raised in Minnesota, Ben developed a deep appreciation for the wilderness early on, which became a cornerstone of his life’s work.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Ben transitioned to civilian life in 2013 and began working as a wilderness therapist for the state of Minnesota. There, he led troubled youth on 22-day backcountry expeditions, using the therapeutic power of nature to facilitate both group and individual therapy. This experience reinforced his belief in the healing effects of the wilderness and inspired his commitment to sharing these benefits with others.

Having taken over 50 backcountry trips, Ben has used these experiences not only to navigate his own post-service challenges but also to help others connect with the therapeutic power of nature. Following a severe back injury in 2014, he turned to wilderness therapy as a primary tool for his recovery, taking 3-5 trips a year to support his physical and mental well-being.

Ben believes it is crucial for veterans to be reunited, as they are often sent home and scattered across the country after their service, sometimes never seeing each other again. Fellowship is essential for veterans, along with the opportunity to face challenges together, push themselves mentally and physically, and rebuild bonds through shared experiences. This belief drives his commitment to creating spaces where veterans can reconnect and support one another.

With a passion for creating meaningful connections and empowering others, Ben has guided numerous veterans and first responders into the backcountry, building a community that thrives on camaraderie, shared experiences, and mutual support. Through Backcountry Alliance, Ben’s goal is to bring more men into the wild, helping them find purpose, healing, and strength in the great outdoors.
